Q & A Counselling

What counselling do you offer?

I support individuals and couples in navigating a wide range of relationship issues, including challenges involving parenting, family dynamics, and communication breakdowns. Drawing on evidence-based approaches—such as the Gottman Method—I tailor each session to meet your unique needs and relationship goals.

Beyond relationship counselling, I also work with clients experiencing a broad spectrum of mental health and life challenges, including:

  • Anxiety, stress, and burnout

  • Depression and mood difficulties

  • Grief, loss, and life transitions

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress

  • Low self-esteem and personal growth

  • Addictions and harmful behaviours

  • Work-related stress and professional challenges

  • Suicidal thoughts and emotional overwhelm

  • Adjusting to major life changes, such as retirement

No matter where you are in your journey, I offer a safe, supportive space for you to explore, heal, and grow at your own pace.

I do not work in the areas of domestic violence, eating disorder, sexual identify issues, sex therapy and conditions that include psychosis. I will support clients if these issues are assessed to find appropriate support.

What Practices Do I Use?

My counselling approach is grounded in mainstream, evidence-based practices that research shows are effective in supporting meaningful change. I tailor each session to your individual needs, drawing from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including:

  • Strengths-Based Therapy – We identify your existing strengths and resources, and use these as powerful tools to overcome challenges.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – A practical approach that helps you understand and change unhelpful patterns in thinking and behaviour.

  • Solution-Focused Therapy – Rather than dwelling on problems, we explore what’s worked for you in the past and how to build on those successes.

  • Mindfulness Techniques – Learn to cultivate awareness and presence, helping you respond to life with intention rather than react out of habit.

  • Narrative Therapy – Together, we explore the stories you tell yourself and discover new, empowering ways to view your experiences and possibilities.

These approaches—and others, where appropriate—will be discussed with you so that we can develop a collaborative, personalised plan that feels right for you.

Who Do You Work With, and How Long Does Counselling Take?

I work with adults from diverse backgrounds, including individuals and couples. Whether you're seeking support on your own or with a partner, counselling can help you explore your concerns, develop new strategies, and find meaningful paths forward. If your partner is not ready to attend sessions, individual counselling can still be a valuable space for reflection and growth.

While I do not provide counselling for children or adolescents, but I offer support to parents navigating parenting challenges or family concerns.

Many mature-aged clients also reach out for assistance with grief and loss, life transitions, or adjusting to retirement and the changing seasons of life.

The number of sessions varies depending on your needs. Some people find that one or two sessions are enough to feel more equipped, while others benefit from longer-term support—especially in the context of relationship counselling or ongoing personal challenges.

To ensure your experience is as helpful as possible, I use evidence-based tools—the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) and the Session Rating Scale (SRS)—to track progress and tailor each session to your evolving needs. Research shows that using these tools significantly enhances the effectiveness of counselling.

Qualifications and Experience

I bring a strong knowledge base and a wealth of practical experience to my counselling work. I hold two master’s degrees in counselling, along with a doctorate that focused on counselling research—deepening both my understanding of client issues and real-world application of counselling approaches.

I have over twenty years' experience in counselling with several thousands of hours in practice and have spent over a decade teaching counselling at the university level. This blend of hands-on clinical experience and training counsellors allows me to offer informed, reflective, and effective support to my clients.

I’m professionally registered as a Clinical Member of the Psychotherapists and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and as a Level 4 Member with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA)—both of which represent my commitment to ensure you gain access to safe, accreditated and competent counselling services.
